THE SCIENCE OF SCALP CARE

Oily doesn't always
mean hydrated.

We often focus on the hair we can see, while the scalp beneath it receives far less attention. Yet the scalp is skin — with its own sebum, hydration and barrier characteristics.

OFTEN OVERLOOKED

Hair gets the attention. The scalp often doesn't.

Everyday routines often focus on how the hair looks and feels. Published research examining scalp physiology highlights why it can also be useful to consider the skin beneath the hair.

IN SIMPLE TERMS

Oil and hydration are not the same thing.

The research compared oil and hydration across different areas of the scalp and surrounding skin, then examined how scalp sebum changed after cleansing. The findings highlight an important principle: a scalp can have higher oil levels without necessarily having higher hydration, while cleansing can help reduce excess surface and pore sebum under the study conditions.

WHAT RESEARCH SHOWS

Why the scalp deserves considered care.

A 2026 study examining participants with high scalp sebum production compared physiological characteristics of the scalp with nearby skin and examined changes following shampoo cleansing.

01
SEBUM

A sebum-rich environment.

In the study population, scalp sites showed higher sebum measurements than the frontal hairline and nape of the neck.

02
HYDRATION

Oiliness isn't the same as hydration.

Researchers observed lower hydration measurements on the scalp compared with nearby skin despite higher scalp sebum measurements.

03
CLEANSING

Thoughtful cleansing matters.

Under the study conditions, shampoo cleansing significantly reduced measured surface and pore sebum, highlighting the role of cleansing in managing excess scalp oil.

WHY IT MATTERS

Scalp care starts with awareness.

Understanding oil, hydration and cleansing helps us think beyond hair alone — and give the scalp itself more considered attention. Thoughtful cleansing can help remove excess oil and everyday build-up while keeping scalp care part of the wider hair-care routine.
